MP4 vs GIF vs WebP: The Ultimate Format Comparison for Creators

2026-04-01 · 5 min read

A practical comparison of animated media formats, with benchmarks on quality, file size, and platform compatibility.

The format wars in animated media are real. GIF offers universal compatibility but terrible compression and limited to 256 colors. MP4 (as popularized by Gfycat) offers dramatically better quality and smaller files, but loses the auto-play and loop behavior on some platforms. WebP splits the difference with good compression and animation support. Our testing across 1000 sample animations shows: WebP averages 40% smaller than GIF with identical quality, while MP4 averages 90% smaller but requires a video player. For social sharing, MP4 wins. For embedding, GIF remains safest.
